Google Gemini Skills: How to Use Them and What Happens to Gems
Google is changing how reusable AI instructions work in Gemini. Skills are now beginning to roll out in Google Workspace, and Google says they will ultimately replace Gems across its AI surfaces.
The change matters if you use Gems for repeated tasks, brand instructions, research workflows or custom prompts. Skills are designed to be reusable inside an existing conversation instead of requiring a separate custom assistant.
Gemini Skills rollout dates
According to Google Workspace Help, the Workspace rollout began on October 5, 2026 for Rapid Release domains. Scheduled Release rollout starts October 19. Skills begin rolling out in the Gemini app on October 13, 2026, with completion expected by mid-November.
On November 17, 2026, Gems move into Settings in the Gemini app. Google says users can continue creating, editing and using Gems during the transition. Business and enterprise support ends no sooner than March 1, 2027; education support ends no sooner than June 1, 2027.
What is a Gemini Skill?
A Skill is a reusable set of custom instructions. Instead of opening a separate Gem, you can invoke a Skill from a conversation. Google currently documents the slash command for calling a Skill and says this is expected to move to an @ command later.
The biggest difference is composition: multiple Skills can be combined in one prompt. A team could apply one Skill containing brand rules and another containing a recurring content workflow without building a separate assistant for every combination.
How to use Gemini Skills
- Check availability. The feature is rolling out in stages, so it may not appear immediately.
- Create a Skill. Save reusable instructions for a task you perform repeatedly.
- Call it inside a conversation. Google currently documents using a slash followed by the Skill name.
- Combine Skills when useful. Separate instruction sets can work together in the same task.
Skills vs Gems
Gems are customized versions of Gemini that live as separate assistants. Skills are modular instructions designed to work inside conversations and across tasks. Google also says Skills use the open, Markdown-based SKILL.md format.
Important limitation: Gemini and Workspace Skills do not sync
Google says Skills created in the Gemini app do not currently sync automatically with Skills in Workspace. If you need the same workflow in both places, you must recreate it separately.
This matters for organizations using Workspace Studio. Google no longer allows new flows to add the Ask a Gem step, although existing flows using it can continue working during the transition.
What should existing Gem users do now?
Do not delete working Gems simply because Skills are arriving. First document important instructions, reference material and workflow assumptions. Then test a Skill version when the feature reaches your account.
If a Gem supports an important process, compare the output before switching. Google plans to migrate remaining Gems in the Gemini app to draft Skills when Gem support ends, but cross-surface syncing is not automatic.
Why Skills may be more useful
The key advantage is modularity. A research Skill can be combined with a formatting Skill; a brand-guideline Skill can be combined with a newsletter workflow. That can reduce duplicated instructions and make recurring AI workflows easier to maintain.
