Free Crochet Yarn Calculator
Estimate how much yarn a crochet project needs from a real swatch instead of guessing from project type alone. Measure the yarn used by your swatch, enter the swatch dimensions and your finished project size, then add a safety allowance.
Best practice: Make the swatch with the same yarn, hook and stitch pattern you plan to use. Textured stitches can consume very different amounts of yarn.
How the estimate works
The calculator measures yarn consumption per square centimeter from your own swatch, scales that consumption to the planned project area, then adds your chosen allowance. It is an estimate: borders, shaping, joins, stitch changes and tension differences can change the final requirement.
Before buying yarn
- Wash and dry the swatch if the finished project will be washed.
- Use the exact stitch pattern when possible.
- Add a larger allowance for complex borders, motifs or uncertain sizing.
- Round up to whole skeins and check dye lots for projects where color consistency matters.
